I also don't agree with the notion of 'funtionality' over "aesthetics"- in general and in particular when it comes to reading. I wish the design had been actually neglected! It looks like some mentally retarded toddler gave it a try after watching Lawrence of Arabia. Somebody went out of his way to 'create' this abomination.
That's what pisses me off, and probably other people too. Somebody put effort into making it super ugly. The problem is that its ugliness is deliberate - it's unnecessarily ugly. Helvetica / Arial, some minimalist icons and you're good to go. If that was the case, it wouldn't be nearly as ugly as it actually is. I do not agree with the notion of its aesthetics being merely neglected in favor of its funcionality though. I kinda agree with both sides: Calibre is very useful but unfortunately it's also extremely ugly.
